Description

Greek god Apollo using The Game of Thrones

Apollo was the God of Truth, Prophecy and Oracles, Healing, Plague and Disease, Music and Arts, Song and Poetry, Knowledge, Archery, and the protection of the young.

He was the son of Zeus and Leto and the twin of Artemis. He tricked his sister into killing Orion who she was in love with.

His various attributes included a wreath and branch of laurel; bow and quiver; raven; and the lyre.

He had fallen in love with a Nymph named Daphne and instead of allowing him to have she turned into a Laurel tree. He had numerous mortal children and several divine children, but his favorite was his son Asklepius.

He had fallen deeply in love with Coronis a Princess of Oikhalia (Oechalia) an area in Thessaly. They had one mortal son named Melaneus who became King of Oikhalia. But the second child a strong demigod Asklepius the birth killed her. Their son later became the God of Medicine.

Although Myth says she cheated on Apollo with a mortal and she was killed for it by Artemis but the child was rescued. Although I believe what it was is that she didn't cheat on him but the birthing of Asklepios is what killed her as his name means 'to cut open' and the child couldn't come out and she had to have a ceasarion to get the child out and it killed her. And the rumor of her cheating was spread by the man (Iskhys) who she had rejected for Apollo spread the rumor to asise his pride of being rejected.

He was worshipped by the Delphic order and his major area of worship was Delphi along the slope of Mount Parnassus were his oracle resided and were people went to hear their prophecies. His oracle in delphi was named Pythia.

Here he is in his regular garb. On his head are laurel leaves and he is holding his lyre and a bowl used in prophecy making.

Plants that were associated with him was the Laurel, and Larkspur. Animals that were sacred to him was the Swan, Raven, Mouse, and Wolf. Also sacred Icon items to him was the Lyre, Laurel wreath or branch, Bow & arrows, and Delphic tripod.

The areas of his worship in Southern Greece were Attica, Megaris, Aigina, Korinthia, Sicyonia, Argolis, Lakonia, Messenia, Elisa, Achaia, Arcadia. In Central Greece Boeotia, Euboia, Phocis, Aitolia, Akarnania, Leukas (Lefkada). In Northern Greece was Epeiros and Thessalia. North of Greece was Illyria. In the Greek Aegean the islands of Delos, Keos, Lesbos, Chios, Samos, Chalkia, Rhodes and Thera. In Anatolia the towns of Troad, Teuthrania, Lydia, Karia, Lykia, and Phrygia. As well as Cyprus, Egypt, Gaul in Southern France and Campania in southern Italy.

Thanks to being curious I did some rough calculations and have estimated that if Melaneus and Asklepius and their mom had exsisted then the date the his sons birth would have been 1313 BCE.

Interesting enough the Greek Gods are divided into categories he is listed with the Theoi Agoraioi (Gods of the market place), the Theoi Halioi (Gods of the Sea) as a minor sea deity, the Theoi Iatrikoi (Gods of Medicine and Healing) the Theoi Mantikoi (Gods of oracles, divination and prophecy) the Theoi Mousikoi (Gods of music, dance and education in the arts), the Theoi Polemikoi (Gods of War) as he was God of Archery. His son Asklepius was also a member of the Theoi Iatrikoi and his children and wife.

His sacred animals were Swans, Ravens, Wolves, Dolphins, Roe Deer, Cicadas, Hawks, Snakes and Mice.

He fathered many mortal sons and a handful of daughters.
