Artemis, Goddess of the Hunt and Children

Greek Goddess Artemis using the Roman Lady maker and Game of Thrones

Artemis was the Goddess of Hunting, wild animals and the protector of girl children until they were married. She was also a goddess of the maiden dance and song and of Sudden death and disease, and of Birth.

She was the twin sister to Apollo and both children of Zeus and Leto, she was born first then helped her mother with Apollo. She was a virgin goddess and had hunters. When she was a child she had her father grant her 6 wishes, one was to always remain a virgin, to have many names to set her apart from Apollo, to be the Light-Bringer, to have a bow and arrow and a knee-length tunic, to have 60 of Oceanus' youngest daughters to be in her choir and to have no city dedicated to her but to rule the mountains and the ability to help women in the pains of childbirth. She spends some of her time in the form of a young girl.

In one myth when the mortal man Actaeon found her bathing she transformed him into a deer and he was torn appart by his dogs, in another when the Queen Niobe of Thebes boasted about her 14 children and claimed supperiority over motherhood to Leto she and her brother avenged their mother and killed all but 1 of the children. In another when the Giant Tityos tried to ravish their mother she and Apollo slew the giant and had him punished in the underworld.

Also she was stated in one myth to have slain her brother Apollo's lover Coronis after she had an affair while pregnant, although the side note for the myth notes that in another version of the story she may have slew her in a tit-for-tat reprisal against Apollo for the death of her beloved Orion. My thoughts is that she refused to protect Coronis while she was in labor with her powerful demi-god son by Apollo and it resulted in her death.

She had a possibly plutonic relationship with Orion until her brother tricked her into killing him, she loved him.

As a result of Apollo tricking her into killing Orion she may have cursed him to also loose his true love and to never have her by his side so long as she couldn’t be with Orion. Which came true as Apollo's true love Coronis died giving birth to their demi-god son.

Interesting enough a cartoon show in Canada called Class of the Titans were several decendants of heroes are battling an escaped Cronus, in one episode it is revealed Artemis was engaged to Orion and had a betrothal gift a golden wrist cuff he gave to her. After Cronus brought Orion back in the form of stars to seek vengance for his death, Artemis gives the cuff to Atlanta to stop Orion and after realizing his death was accidental he returned to the Stars.

That's why in the pic she has a cuff on her wrist, as I am doing a mix.

The areas of her worship in southern Greece were Attica, Megaris, Salamis, Aigina, Korinthia, Sicyonia, Argolis, Lakonia, Messenia, Elis, Achalia, and Arcadia. In Central Greece Boeotia, Euboia, Phocis, Ozolian Locris and Aitolia. In Norhern Greece Thessalia. In the Greek Aegean the islands of Delos, Naxos, Lesbos, Samos, Ikaria, Rhodes and Crete. In Anatolia the towns of Troad, Teuthrania, Lydia, Karia, Pamphylia, Byzantium, Phrygia and Kilikia. Tauric in the ancient area of Scythia. Sicily and in southern Italy Kampania and in central Italy Latium, as well as Gaul in France and Iberia.

Plants that were associated with her was, Cypress, Walnut, and Amaranth-flower. Animals that were sacred to her was the Deer, Bear, Wild boar, Guinea fowl, and Quail. Also sacred Icon items to her was the Bow & arrows, Hunting spears, Lyre, and Deer.

Interesting enough the Greek Gods are divided into categories she is listed with the Theoi Nomioi (Rustic Gods and Spirites) and the Theoi Halioi (Gods of the Sea) as a minor Sea Deity, the Theoi Mousikoi (Gods of music, dance and education in the arts) She was also a fertility Goddess.
