Description

The 3 Queen Goddesses of the Greek Pantheon

Left to Right: Persephone, Amphitrite, and Hera

Persephone is a Spring time Goddess and Queen of the Underworld. For 6 months of the year she is with her husband Hades Ruler of the Underworld and God of the hidden wealth of the Earth, so she is rich, and she spends the other 6 with her mother. She is the daughter of Demeter and Zeus and may possibly be more powerful than her mother. By Hades she is the mother of Macaria and Melinoe and possibly Zagreus and according to some sources the Erinyes.

By Hades she is the mother of
1. Macaria - Goddess of Blessed Death
2. Melinoe - Goddess of Ghosts
3-5. The Erinyes

Note: The Erinyes are listed with 5 different parentages, one is that just Hades is their father and another that Hades and Persephone are their parents, I am going to take this to mean that there were maybe 5 groups and the ones listed under Persephone is the 5th group. I am also making Zagreus a different Zagreus as he is also listed as having Hades being his father although it lists only him as his parent so he maybe his son by Leuce.

She also goes by the name Kore which was the name her mother gave her which means 'the maiden', possibly meaning her mother intended for her to be a virgin goddess. Her name Persephone means 'destructive-slayer'. Her roman name is Proserpina.

If you are looking for boring Greek Gods than her husband is it, he barly does anything note worthy, the only significant thing he ever did was kidnap and make Persephone his wife and trap Peirithoos in a chair but the guy was planning to abduct his wife. He is the most loyal of his brothers to his wife, and may or may not have had an affair with Minthe. So why Hollywood insists on making Hades look like a bad guy I do not understand as he barely did anything bad, apart from Zeus.

Her story is actually called The Abduction of Persephone and not the other way it is refered to. Also the original myths gloss over what Persephone herself wanted out of the whole situation, though Homer does suggest that she enjoyed her role as queen of the dead.

Becaus of her mother throwing a temper tantrum she had to return to her mother but before she left the underworld she ate 6 pomegranate seeds and thus gets to spend half the year with her mother and half with her husband. Although many TV tales with their story have shortened it to 4 months.

She had been tricked once by King Sisyphos into allowing him to return to living world to punish his wife for inproperly burring him and he ended up keeping Thantos hostage until he was caught and SHE punished him by having to continuously roll a rock up a hill that would roll back down the hill.

She also had nearly been involved in a kidnapping attempt when Theseus and Peirithous decided that they would marry daughters of Zeus and Theseus choose Helene and left the abducted girl with his mother and accompanied Peirithous to the underworld to help him kidnap her but they were tricked into sitting in the chair of forgetfullness were Peirithous has remained while Theseus was rescued later by Hercules.

She is featured in Hercules The Legendary Journeys in a S2 episode called the Other Side. She is also in an episode of Mythic Warriors Guardians of Legend.

Her areas of Worship in Southern Greece were Attica, Megaris, Sikyonia, Korinthia, Argolis, Lakonia, Akhaia, Arkadia and Elis. In Cental Greece were Boeotia. In the Aegean sea the islands of Paros and Rhodes. In Anatolia the towns of Lydia and Karia. As well as Sicily and Bruttium in Southern Italy and an island near Britain.

Plants that were associated with her was wheat, narcissus, black poplar and the mint. Animals that were sacred to her was the screech owl. Also sacred Icon items to her was the Eleusian Torch or torches and wheat sheafs.

Interesting enough the Greek Gods are divided into categories she is listed with the Theoi Georgikoi (Gods of agriculture) and the Theoi Khthonioi (Gods of the Underworld) as co-ruler with Hades. She presided over the Eleusian Mysteries

Amphitrite was an oceanid or Sea nymph, a daughter of the Titan Oceanus and Titaness Tethys. She was also the queen of the sea as she was the wife of Poseidon God of Earthquakes and Ruler of the Oceans. By him she was the mother of his son Triton, daughters Rhode, Benthesikyme, Cymopoleia, and possibly Proteus.

She like her sister-in-law Hera had an unfaithful husband but he wasn't was bad as Zeus.

Here she is in her human form or partial human form thus her hair color. Note her hair is different than her other pic because it morphed a little from her natural hair color as light brown in nymph form to partial human form or grey blue.

She was often depicted in the artistic decorations of Poseidon's temples. Presumably she was honoured alongside the god.

Plants that were associated with her was the seaweed, and animals that were sacred to her was the dolphin, fish and seals. Also sacred Icon items to her was the dolphin, fish and pinched fingers.

Interesting enough the Greek Gods are divided into categories she is listed with the Theoi Halioi (Gods of the Sea)

*****
Hera was the Goddess of Women and Marriage. She was the daughter of Cronus and Rhea or maybe just Rhea. She became the wife of Zeus and was his 4th and thus became Queen of the Gods and the Sky. She became the mother of Hebe, Ares, Hephaestus, Eileithyia and possibly Caerus, Alatheia, Calocagathia and maybe Eris (as some sources list her and Zeus as the parents of Eris) by Zeus. Although she may have had Hephaestus or Ares without the help of Zeus or just Ares without Zeus. She like her siblings Hestia, Demeter, Poseidon and Hades were swallowed as babies by their father but thanks to being immortal they survived and were eventually freed by Zeus.

The Chaste Tree, and Pomegranate were her sacred plants, while animals that were sacred to her were the Cuckoo, Peacock, Crane, Hawk, Cow (Heifer), and Lion. Sacred objects to her were the Lotus staff, and Crown.

She could be a vindictive and jealous woman when she discovered her husband cheating which was alot and she would punish the women even before she married Zeus she was jealous of the women he was with like Leto. She tricked Semele into making Zeus reveal his true godly self and constantly made Hercules/Heracles suffer possibly because of his name although she later reconciled with him.

She and her sister-in-law Amphitrite both suffered from having cheating husbands, and her husband quite possibly at one point had enough children by other women to take over Persia. After the birth of Hephaestus who was malformed possibly because while Pregnant Zeus angered her and hid from her and her anger went into the child affecting his appearance and she horrified by the appearance tossed the child from Olympus badly injuring him and for years he was raised by Tethys, and after Heph discovered his parentage imprissoned Hera on a throne but eventually freed her.

Oddly enough even though she dispised Hercules she never directly attacked him, apart from the one time when she sent snakes to kill him as a baby, she only ever indirectly attacked him using minions and pawns like Eurystheus. One possible explanation for this is shown in the TV Shows Young Hercules and Hercules: The Legendary Journeys were it was revealed Zeus placed a protection order on him preventing any olympian god from attacking/harming him. Meaning they couldn't directly attack him.

She was a patron of Jason and helped on him on his journey for the Golden Fleece. She convinced Aphrodite to get her son Eros to shoot his love arrow at Medea so that she would fall in love with him and help. This was also the one time she set her anger against Hercules, when he was still mortal, aside because he was helping Jason in his quest.

She may have been jealous of Persephone due to her having such a loyal husband.

Note: She was Zeus' 4th wife, his 1st being Metis, the 2nd was Themis, and the 3rd was Eurynome.

Interesting to note that it is never stated in the myths if Zeus divorced Metis and I doubt that swallowing her counts as Divorce so if they never divorced then Zeus' other marriages don't count which means He is not truely married to Hera and she is the other woman and thus Metis is really the Queen of the Gods.

Her areas of Worship in Southern Greece were Attica, Corinthia, Argolis, Lakonia, Sikyonia, Arkadia, and Elis. In Central Greece were Boeotia and Opuntian Locris in the village of Pharygae. In the Greek Aegean the island Samos, In Anatolia the town Lydia, as well as Egypt, and in the southern Italy Bruttium and Picenum. As well as Latium in Central Italy. She was also worshiped in Iberia in Southern Spain near gibralter.

Interesting enough the Greek Gods are divided into categories she is listed with the Theoi Gamelioi (Gods of Marriage), and because she was married to Zeus she was also part of the Theoi Ouranioi (Gods of the Sky). She was also a fertility goddess.

Note: I used the crown and the hair from the dolldivine dwarf scene maker for Hera as it works alot better. I also have her eyes as a mix of Dark Blue and sea-blue green like the eyes on the tail feathers of the male peacock

Great! One error though. Macaria, while some dispute, in main, was a priestess of persephone's temple, not daughter. Melinoe was more said to be Zeus', and then there was Zagreus. Disputed to be either hades' or Zeus' son, depending on how one should translate.
